The word 'mince' conjures up a few different images. Forget about John Inman. Forget about burgers. The new super stylin' fixie from On-One takes its Italian name from freshly 'minced' or 'ground' coffee beans. Who says they can't do continental cafe culture up North?
As well as being a pretty, eye-catching and conversation-provoking item for urbane types to leave leaned up against the table outside their favourite coffee bar while they browse 'Cheekbone' magazine and micro-adjust the tautness of their skinny jeans' turn-ups, the Macinato is a sharp handling bicycle for no-nonsense types to get where they need to be. Think of it as a ristretto on wheels. Minimalist, effective and neat.
The name of the game when we were designing this frame was clean, straight lines. Based on the same geometry as our beloved Pompino but stiffened up a bit the frame is made from cold drawn butted 4130 chrome molybdenum for high stength and light weight.
We've taken the front end fit and steering geometry of the Pompino and allied that to a slightly larger diameter top tube and super-short chainstays. This new top tube means the Macinato tracks incredibly well during hard cornering and those heart-in-mouth taxi-driver-avoiding quick-change manoeuvres that make your commute so entertaining in the morning.
The 405mm chainstays keep your pedal power responsive whilst still offering more than enough room for 28mm tyres. A particularly nice touch on the Macinato are the simple-to-use Taperlock rear dropouts that do away with the need for ugly chaintugs. Less is more and all that. The rear spacing is track bike standard 120mm.
Shown here the Macinato is running in the most popular setup: fixed gear, flat narrow bar and with just one road calliper brake up front. You can of course run it with a brake at the rear if you wish. Once you've earned your fixie wings you can also do things properly and run it brakeless. Maybe with a drop bar? It's up to you.
Up front the head angle is a sporting 73 degrees and seat angle is 73.5 degrees to keep you in control over your cranks. The bottom bracket drop is 66mm for a tad more ground clearance when you're laying it down and spinning it around.
The Macinato isn't just a pretty bike, it's a finely honed street weapon, with style, panache and credentials to back it up. All in all it's a damned fine bike to ride. The fact that our team executed one of our classiest ever paintjobs and decal designs is the icing on the cake. Or the crema on your coffee if you prefer.
